Auch in der generalistischen Ausbildung werden durch die Wahl des so genannten „Vertiefungseinsatzes“ besondere Kenntnisse in einem Bereich erworben. Dennoch können Pflegefachfrauen und -männer in allen Pflegebereichen arbeiten. Die Ausbildung schließt mit einer staatlichen Prüfung ab, die zum Führen der Berufsbezeichnung Pflegefachfrau oder Pflegefachmann berechtigt.

Eine Verkürzung der Ausbildungsdauer ist möglich, wenn der Schüler vorher eine Ausbildung zum Pflegefachhelfer absolviert hat.
